Our world is inundated with political division, social injustice, cultural appropriation, environmental degradation, and technological disruption. As global citizens, we are facing a multitude of crises, but these crises are also presenting us with an opportunity to resist, rethink, and renew how we move forward as a society and as educators. Especially as educators.
Although I do not work in the field of education, I am well-versed in the discipline of Language Arts. I graduated with a BA in English Literature. Since then, I have been working in the tech industry as a technical writer and content strategist. Now I am pursuing a master's degree in English Education. Through my educational and professional experience, I know first-hand that Language Arts presents a complex learning journey, from the fundamentals of reading and writing to critical thinking, diverse-perspective seeking, analytical synthesis, rhetorical composition, and creative storytelling. Through this learning journey, we can explore and develop our unique perspectives, authentic voices, and identity in ways that enable us to build open dialogue, community, connection, and empathy.
I also understand that such an educational path is not easy to traverse, especially in an era that privileges efficient production over slower, in-depth learning. However, I believe that the productive struggle inherent to Language Arts is critical in preparing all of us for navigating today’s tumultuous climate.
In this blog, I will explore the value of a Language Arts education, and more specifically these topics:
The benefits of productive struggle that are fundamental to craftsmanship and especially within writing.
The broader implications of AI on society, the environment, and education.
The ethical and sustainable integration and resistance of generative AI in writing.
I welcome you to join me in this exploration.
